While gangs are often conceptualized as male dominated spaces, female involvement in gangs remains widespread. The roles women play in gangs are often gendered, and many are limited to “support tasks,” such as smuggling items to and from prisons. In the midst of mass detentions, however, the roles these women play are being redefined. With an increasing number of male gang members incarcerated in “mega prisons”, women on the outside are left with more responsibility and leadership. Weapons and drug smuggling, acts of physical violence, and extortion are increasingly being carried out by women, shifting the social hierarchies of these gangs in the process.
