Moody ad for THE DESERT MAN (1917). At the dawn of the 1910s, movies were advertised by producer and the star system had barely begun. By the middle of the decade, movie ads were marvels of graphic design with beautiful illustrations.
Gotta love the chaps.
There's an erroneous belief that westerns were for kids until STAGECOACH but 1910s audiences loved their grim, gritty, dare we even say, revisionist westerns with killer heroes. Hart was the king of that genre but even cowboys later associated with spangled getups, like Tom Mix, were dustier then.
