I highly agree with this. Community has got to be an active process, prescriptive even. People need to know what is and isn't welcome and some of them will change their ways in order to stick around (to a certain extent), like role modelling, and others will get lost.
One bit of advice I'd give indie devs is to approach authoritatively delivered "this is the way" advice with caution and poke it with a stick. Listen, but then critically evaluate if it makes sense for you.
