Two things: 1) Israel did not time the detonations to gain specific military advantage or to minimize civilian harm. They were just afraid they'd lose the capability---their "investment." 2) They had direct access to Hezbollah comms. But they preferred to blow off a bunch of hands.

Regarding point #1, I would be extremely surprised if Israel didn't invade Lebanon in the next few days.
