A really funny post 9/11 thing that happened was that the media got extremely invested in the narrative of the New York Yankees winning the world series that year symbolizing our national recovery from the attacks then they blew a save in game 7 and lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Watching the Yankees lose was what this American really needed to heal his shattered heart

At the last moment, when all seemed lost, Mariano Rivera remembered what Bush's father did to Panama and saved us all from the darkest timeline (and some of the worst sports movies in the history of cinema).

The blow out game in phoenix was a blast. Everyone was rapt and racked with glee. My local Applebees was giving liquor to minors.

A World Series between the Yankees and a team that employed both Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling had a certain air of doom hanging over it anyway.

Dbacks fan here. Fond memories indeed. It is, however, the only time I’ve ever seen the entire country line up behind the Yankees. I like to think Boston fans, at least, we’re cheering for AZ; they just couldn’t do so out loud.

that's why they had to rig the NFL a few months later to have THE PATRIOTS win the Super Bowl
