one of the pernicious things about the tyrannical rule by the SCOTUS Gang of Six is that voters - especially low info swing voter - don't understand that it's happening or who is responsible for it. The media then helps them sell this lie by inventing Trump's fake "moderation" on abortion
Absolutely true, but at the same time, there are quite a few Republicans who are pro-choice and who would love to go back to Roe/Casey and make it a non-issue. So they see a vote to protect abortion rights and a vote for Trump as basically fine/good enough.
Also there’s a lot of “whoa is me” and “why won’t the voters just understand” and “darn Fox News” It’s like quit worrying about that and start thinking about what YOU are going to do
Would have helped for Dems to run against the court who stripped them of their rights as opposed to drag their feet and sing songs on the steps They got their sort of eventually but in the critical moments to sear it in peoples minds they missed badly
and by soft-pedaling the extremity of the Supreme Court! this has been one of my biggest points about the political wisdom of aggressive court reform: it actually helps frame for dumbasses not paying attention who is responsible for abortion restrictions.
This is generally a problem in all presidential systems where the executive and legislature are elected separately - both have democratic legitimacy and so it's hard for voters to understand who's responsible. Our system with its judicial fuckery takes that problem and amplifies it
Also why the “but the Supreme Court!” argument didn’t work to drum up support for Clinton. The people who needed to be convinced aren’t connecting those dots
Also it’s hard to explain to people ‘the American government is rule by a shadow council of unelected wizards’ without sounding insane.
