I think that there is a directionality quality to it. She broke through so quickly that there was hope that she'd run away with it and the reversion to baseline it bad. There is also just ab imbalance of outcomes. If I told you that you had a forty percent chance of dying of cancer you'd be upset!
I feel like there was a steady stream of polls (yeah yeah I know) coming in that were proving to be really surprising (Ted Cruz might be gone! FLORIDA might go for her!) and provided a lot of optimism and then things went more or less silent and I think now people are back to just assuming the worst

twitter brain-cooking is real. my friend recently said they were upset that Harris is being too hostile to R voters and is refusing to find common ground to win votes the Cheneys, cops and never-trumpers at DNC, R in cabinet, none of that made the feed I was stunned
A think a lot of it is that we're no longer in the 'miracle' phase of when Biden dropped out and the campaign assumes she's got the base as locked in as it's gonna get and is going after undecides/Haley votes, which understandably takes the wind out of everyone's sails. It feels very...normie-Dem.
She’s not doomed, obviously. She’s likely to win. It’s just alarming how close it is and how malevolent the GOP is. Many are anxious as we know how racist and sexist some voters have been in the past. So nobody can relax.

I was talking to a really smart, educated, upper-middle-class person. He was very upset that Democrats had censored social media, which he felt was a 1st amendment infringement. He's voting for the guy who wanted to shoot protesters instead. THAT's where my doomerism comes from.

Early in the campaign she was kind of a blank slate people could project hopes on. Now that she's filled that in it's underwhelming, and so the Democratic base loses energy > feels like all is lost.
