Crucially the dynamic where you just stipulate that a lot of or most new housing should be below-market affordable is effective to recruiting useful idiots to the side of NIMBYs who use that argument as a tool to instead build nothing at all

It's really odd that people expect a large share of new housing to be within financial reach of poor or even moderate income households. Only about 0.5-2% of housing in most cities is less than a year old. I've never lived in a new house and may never, and that's probably true for most people.
