it's a two-level scam too: how much of OpenAI's revenue is other money-losing AI startups that just are wrappers that make API calls to ChatGPT? They're at the top level of the pyramid scheme and still losing billions
8 years from now it'll be a niche offering in AWS or large companies will roll their own.
Ed Zitron's recent podcast episode is about going through some of those numbers and basically says they're doomed, and sooner than one might think.

The term ‘AI’ has become one of the most overhyped buzzwords since Y2K. Running an agency, I test 2-10 AI applications each week, and most fail to deliver. True Ai requires more than complexity, it demands genuine intuition and sophisticated software alone does not equate to real AI. Be cautious.
It's important to note that one of OpenAI's biggest investors is Nvidia, who has been selling them their GPUs for those fucking server farms. Now they are starting to divest as they see the bubble close to bursting
the price of their api calls is farcically low for the compute resources required for each call, there's absolutely no _way_ they're not bleeding money on each call. by sitting on top of the pyramid, they're actually hemorrhaging money faster than the start-ups that are basically a gpt4o skin.
Microsoft has literally put it's weight behind AI as a tool, along with a huuuuuge portion of programmers and designers, at the top of the SV MLM pyramid... and they're still expecting to lose more money two years from now than some useful industries will make in revenue over the same period
boy, Azure is sure making a lot of $$ from these OpenAI guys
I have a family member who works for exactly this kind of startup. I give the company six months or so. He doesn’t care as long as the checks clear and he can move on to servicing the next guy’s bad idea.
