"the vibes around the economy are bad because people are paying to replace phones/laptops every 3-5 years" am I literally the only one who remembers what the past was like?!

No you are not but the people who are making these takes are too young to do so themselves

Also most of that stuff still works it’s just people want the newer model. My parents get all of my old stuff and my dad is using my old iPhone 10 and they’ve got my perfectly functional 2017 iMac that I finally replaced with a MacBook last year. Owning a desktop computer in 1994 was like "it costs as much as a car and will be literally obsolete in a 'no longer functions at all' sense in 24 months" it just didn't feel like it took as long because you were 7 years old

Also, relatively speaking, you can get good phones and laptops for way cheaper. Consumer electronics are the thing where you're massively ahead by basically every measure.

Most of the mobile phones I owned in the 2000s and early 2010s died within 1-2 years because of some problem with the USB port, the screen, or the on/off switch that was too expensive to be worth repairing.

I have an iPhone 12 I bought in the spring of 2021 that still works great and holds a charge all day

Yeah! What the world truly needs is 2-4x more disposable technology made with rare earth materials!

Lmao my last three laptops I can do everything but high-end game with and it’s cost $200-300 each time

"The economy is bad because consumer goods are more expensive" is like, the absolute most preposterously laughable take. Like say whatever you want about housing, education, and healthcare, you can get a 4k smart tv for 150 bucks

I’m not sure my parents have ever had a cellphone for more than 6 years. they’ve had them since the mid-90s. And it’s totally unnecessary to get the newest iPhone; i had the 10 from 2018 to 2021 when it broke and then got another cheaper (less storage) 10 that i used for another year and a half.
