In Denmark archeologists just found an inscription that is the "new" oldest runes in the country. It is on a 2000 year old knife and reads "Small sword".
To be fair, it actually just reads "knife." We don't say a pack of cigarettes is labeled "small cigars."
There's a lovely and horrible museum caption in the National Museum of Ireland about a grad student who spent 10 years trying to decipher the runes on an elk horn, only to discover that it says "This is an elk horn."
There were a series of "transitional" amulets that archaeologists debated for years whether they were hammers or crosses. A few years ago they found a mold for them, clearly labeled "this is a hammer."
