wtf man

The wanton slaughter of birds resulted in significant
declines. William Hornaday estimated that the bird population had declined
by about 46 percent in twenty-six states between 1883 and 1898 (Doughty
1975: 82). However, most of the male conservationists of the time were slow to
recognize the extent to which their own actions as sport hunters and collectors
depleted wildlife stocks. For instance, John James Audubon ranted against eg-
gers and market hunters, referring to them as “the pest of the feathered tribes,”
yet Audubon admitted to shooting hundreds of red-winged starlings (also
known as marsh blackbirds) one afternoon even though he did not think they
were very appetizing. He also described shooting Canada geese until the “number
of geese obtained would seem . . . so very large that . . . [I] shall not specify it”
