Y'all will now all be haunted by the ghost of Peter van de Kamp. Obviously not the same planet he reported, but he was out there tediously measuring for decades.

The current pictures of comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS are reminding me of Comet West in 1976, which was grand after quickly popping out of morning twilight. (1976 photograph with 61-cm Seyfert telescope of Dyer Obs., Vanderbilt Univ.)

Photograph of Comet West from 1976, showing dust and gas tails and looking a lot like latest images of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS.

<Wonders about imaging, looks up "minimoon" 2024 PT5 coordinates in JPL Horizons> Minimoon? More like "puts hands in pockets and whistles casually while trying to briefly blend in with anything making a full bound orbit". I had not appreciated what a short arc it makes while formally bound to Earth.

The flight restrictions during a UA game do usually go a couple of miles (to the Tuscaloosa airport, in fact). Still, maybe I oughtta make sure my camera battery is charged, put on a zoom lens, and go sit out on the front porch at sunset just in case...

"Count Dracula was 412 when he moved to England in search of new blood. Sauron was 54,000 years old when he forged The One Ring. Cthulhu had seen galaxies flare into life and fade to darkness before he put madness in the minds of men. It's never too late to follow your dreams!" —Unknown

Astronomers even use natural calcite rhombs in polarimeters. My advisor got two from a prospector in Mexico, so big they had individual names. I never did figure out how he managed the paperwork for that transaction from NSF funds.

The ACS ramp filters are wizardry. Reading this I kept hearing "Much that was, is lost." "Some things that should not have been forgotten were lost."
