SPACE FACTS: DAY 137/365🔭🛰️🧪 Stellar mass black holes are difficult to detect because of their lack of emission, so we have only found ~20 in our galaxy—out of an estimated 100 million!
100m!? The universe is always bigger than I think even when I do my pitiful human best to adjust to the scale. Are those all from stellar collapse or other sources?
SPACE FACTS: DAY 138/365🔭🛰️🧪 During a core collapse supernova, the core of the star contracts to a super dense state, and the falling upper layers then "bounce" off it, creating a shock wave and explosion that blasts away the upper layers and leaves behind a neutron star or black hole.
Wait, so there is a black hole in our galaxy for every human who has ever lived?
