Apparently we need a reminder: Taking disabled people into STATE CUSTODY by force is not a good idea. The list of people who don't get to have bodily autonomy is growing by the minute, and you might not think it applies to you today buuuut.... you might be surprised how fast it can.

I need to read this bill. My sister was homeless and unmedicated for years on the streets of San Francisco. We finally got her out of there and back on meds only to watch her slide back into mental illness. It’s a huge burden for my mom and for the rest of us.

I do get that this is a double-edged sword that can be used against people but at the same time my son would still be alive if this law had been in place last year

i think an interesting thing to remember in this instance is that the envelope of conditions necessary for involuntary commitment are narrower than the envelope of conditions necessary for Arrest

In my lifetime, being gay was considered a mental illness. (Some people probably still think it is, but that's a different evil.)

Time for this Evergreen X-Men panel again

Colossus, from X-Men, speaking to his children. The whole quote is too long for alt text, but he tells of how the joke "There should be a test to become a parent eventually expandss into a test that excludes "anyone they want." You think you are working for the greater good, but one day, it is you who is barred, because some gene, some history, some past behavior, and suddenly you too are sick, dangerous, criminal. "Because the truth is this: human hate can adapt to anything. If someone hates you, they will come up with a reason after the fact."

I need to read it and see if it is evasive. Taking bodily autonomy away to solve societal issues seems to be back in fashion now. It didn't work last time.

so what do you think we should do with people who are a threat to themselves and others? we just had a horrible case in Berkeley where an adult man with schizophrenia stabbed his mother to death while his teen daughter hid in another room. this after years of escalating violence.

They already toss around the idea trans people by definition are “mentally Ill” when that’s been declassified as a mental illness since 2005. They’re going to fuck us all up.

The people in this thread cheering it on do not care a lick about mentally ill people no matter how much they want to convince themselves they do; it's all about getting us out of the way for their convenience at the end of the day, no actual solutions whatsoever

The trouble with slippery slopes is that they are more slippery than most people think.
