Outside the major metropolitan areas, a huge swath of the eastern United States looks like this. The eastern deciduous forest ecosystem is truly vast.

Late-blooming Crinum ‘Infusion’ on a misty moisty morning. Flowers are enormous, highly fragrant, and apparently delicious if you are a hungry katydid. 🌱

Gigantic hot-pink flowers on a 4 ft  inflorescence.  The flowers each have 3 petals and 3 sepals
A green grasshopper-like insect is sitting on a pink petal.  Behind it is another petal that is missing several semi-circular chunks.

My impression from The Hobbit is that the eagles probably eat orcs and wargs. Doubt they’d be too excited about reducing their prey population—what are the odds that after the war of the ring they were reduced to picking off pack ponies and dwarves in trading caravans.
