even in better funding climates, students should understand when they are supported by taxpayer $ and beholden to certain research themes v their own funding/ideas v flexible funding sources/endowments. It seems a lot of students misunderstand the scope of what project PIs can support in the lab

Yeah, I think this information can feel manipulative and burdensome should the PI present it that way
