When I first started covering Tesla critically in 2015 my reporting mostly got picked up by conservative blogs and outlets, who despised Musk as a "green welfare queen" who was tight with the Obama administration. He's a one-man symbol of the biggest political realignment of our times.
"Only 6% of Dems in the poll said they had positive feelings about Musk, while 79% said they had negative feelings. The numbers were flipped for Republicans, with 62% having positive feelings toward him and 14% negative feelings. Independents were split, 31% to 36%" www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-ne...
The poll shows that public views of Musk are increasingly polarized, with Republican support of the billionaire rising while Democratic support falls.
It's funny, I never quite picked up this vibe of him as green guru, but I can totally believe it. It puts in better context, without of course justifying, Star Trek embarrassingly namechecking him
techno-malarky can only take you so far... into orbit to fuck up everyone's view of the universe, but not all the way to Mars!
I give Musk credit for giving the go-ahead to pursue a vertical integration approach to building rockets instead of spreading the love among the usual contractors. That's turned out to be pretty pretty pretty good, and it irritates all the right people. Otherwise he remains a pluperfect jiveaſs.
Your (pretty sure it was you!) writing or tweeting about the SolarCity stuff (in like 2017 maybe?) was what did it for me. Basically They Live sunglasses.

Not really. The two political groups are consistent. Democrats embraced climate goals via tech but not at the expense of being a racist A*H and want to dump him. Republicans embraced racism of Musk even if it meant accepting his climate change grift and govt assistance
Elon's ultimate goal is literally to become Emperor of Mars. For that he needs an admin he can easily scam TRILLIONS out of. Hence Trump. Does it feel ironic that you've kind of also done the opposite flip? I imagine you saw the reverse in perception, though I'm sure to a smaller extent.
I mean, he’s always been foremost a son of apartheid, but it’s less a political alignment than the normal cycle of success followed by self destruction you see with Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Disordered narcissists are great hype men, but they usually destroy what they’ve built in the end.
