I've seen meteor and strobe rocket firework theorized. The former seems more likely given how widespread it was.

It was not a noise like one typically hears - not a car racing or striking something when the driver runs out of talent, nor a steel street plate or even the rare but not unknown gunshot. My best guess for direction was by the switchyards, so I thought it was a train mishap.
