“A-Ying is sorry it’s dirty,” he murmured. “No apologies needed, A-Ying,” she said quietly and pulled him gently back down so that she could tie up his hair. “Is this ribbon special to you?” Not really, he thought. At least, however long ago, it was just a ribbon. But now, it was the ribbon his father had bought him because he said he liked the color. It was the ribbon his mother used to tie up his hair every morning or pulled on to tease him as she laughed brightly. It and the robes on his back when Meilin-jie found him were the only things he had left of his parents. He nodded, because yes, it was special to him now, and she patted his shoulder when she was done with the knot and said, “Then we will endeavor to take good care of it.”
