Happy #PortfolioDay! I’m Desolina and I’m an illustrator and Ignatz-award winning cartoonist. I tell stories about fear, love, and the shadows of human relationships.
I'm actually RELIEVED its evidently a common feeling!! It's not lack of motive or inspiration or ideas...but a singularly new type of pressure to work on a new project after finally selling that first one! It almost feels like there's MORE pressure
Man that sophomore slump/pressure or whatever you want to call it in books is Real AF
Yeah there's definitely probably a lot of lingering association with superhero stuff too. But you definitely see a huge difference in reception to say, BW manga versus full color European comics in the US. I don't know if that's just a coincidence or maybe even BW is just easier for people to read!
I don't think they necessarily are consciously, but there FEELS like there's maybe a subconscious difference... probably more among people who aren't well versed in the medium to begin with!
People outside the industry is almost certainly a big part of it!!
It can't be that the comics in color aren't as good (that's obviously not true), so why does it feel like there's a huge award and prestige gap?
I feel like as I comb through the most lauded comics (by many different metrics) many MANY of those comics are in BW, monochromatic or highly limited color palettes at most.
Genuine question that I've been mulling over...do we (the comics industry at large) take full color comics less seriously in general?
