I'm hoping that having more art and writing tools that are totally disconnected from the internet and other distractions is going to be good for my process, and for my ADHD. Its also about like, creating a more direct and thoughtful space to MAKE art, using tools that are actually fun themselves
Can't pick it up until Friday because the shop noticed a key that wasnt working quite right and they wanted to fix it first, but I'm EXCITED. I've been wanting a typewriter for years and years....I had one as a kid that was the first tool I ever wrote stories with besides a pen and I want to go back
Writing (and publishing) a book has been a lifelong dream of mine....I wanted to be a writer for many years before I even started viewing art as a career possibility. I took it VERY seriously and I love the act of writing so much, and still do it regularly!
So this is less me like, talking about moving away from comics, (a medium i love and cherish and will never stop making) and more my announcement of intention to maybe finally commit to serious writing for some of my projects!
I really want to do more comics, and I think that, without the financial and industry support for long form comics like exists in say, the manga industry, single graphic novels and short form comics are going to be the most sustainable type of comic for me to do, and I want to do MORE
I DO NOT think that prose and comics are interchangeable...they have some overlap but many unique qualities that I cherish in both. So for me a lot of it is realising there are some projects I want to do that will be best realised through the strengths of a novel specifically
I've always enjoyed [prose] writing and ultimately consider myself a writer first and a visual artist second (if only because I do visual art that is in service of storytelling) and so I frequently pick at longer projects and "how can I make this comic work" and keep coming to: as a book
So even if I WANT to commit to some monstrous, ongoing comic project, the options are....shorten it immensely to fit trad publishing and get some pay, or perhaps take it online as a web comics, probably without any pay for the foreseeable future?
Like, specifically in that I have a few stories that are very near and dear to me that are probably too long to be well told in say, a 300 page GN. Comics are unfortunately a big math equation of time/money/methodology
