I think McBride reminds me a little of Dickens - large casts of characters with backstories, long story arcs and social commentary that is (mostly) part of the setting. James is really talented. Those voice actors probably love the challenge.

Our book club liked Deacon King Kong, but the two of us who listened to it LOVED it. The character voices were so distinct and funny and essential to the atmosphere. I wouldn’t have gotten all the voices reading it.
