We're excavating in Yamanashi prefecture right now. The pottery is from the Jomon period, specifically the end of the Middle Jomon period (naming system can get confusing, sorry about that). Current estimate for this pottery type is around 4900~4800 calBP.

Yep. This isn't a perfect reference example, but it's of the same pottery type

Open days are often held at the very end of an excavation, so they're a bit tricky to try to time. There are a lot of great museums to get your archaeology fix though. There are also some shell midden sites in the Kanto area like Kasori that have cross sections exposed if they're a stratigraphy nerd

Depending on what details are most important you may want to test out a few print orientations too. Printing from the new flat side would be easiest, but the details on the top may not be as good as you'd like. Lots to test and toy around with!

youtu.be/RmMDFydHeso?... Jump to 44:24 to see how to close the bottom. You could also cut the bottom using a boolean and then close it up the same way as is shown in the video.

If you are ok using Blender there are a few different ways to make your meshes "watertight" which should allow you to print without too many problems. I can dig up a few links or provide a few screenshots if that will help.
