But also quite frankly even if there were some weird reason why they got rid of my class I am pretty sure I could just walk across the street and get something else somewhere else at Columbia if I wanted to. I don’t worry about it for me but I do worry about adjuncts in general etc.

I’m an adjunct so I’m not full time. I teach my class, I mostly leave, with a few exceptions. But even if they offered tenure or full time I wouldn’t want it. This is not the position of the other adjuncts, that’s kind of the point, I’m different, they really do care about the money and so on.

No. None. They’re not going to get rid of an AI class or me and even if they did, the money is meaningless. They pay nothing and give no benefits, I do it almost like giving back. I would be disappointed to lose access to Columbia libraries, otherwise I don’t care much.

And that’s a small one. There’s things like revoking citizenship and god knows what. It’s not stuff to take casually.

I was in some bar in Atlanta and some guy just walks over to me and goes “You Muslim?” More money not going to help you with that one.

Absolutely. The white ones especially, and I mean ones I personally know, also just have this implicit assumption it won’t affect them. But things like climate and other huge infrastructure and safety problems require a good government.

I think about it all the time actually. It’s not good to lose touch with reality but especially if you only socialize with other people like that you can quickly lose track.

It’s true. Even I am hugely insulated. Things like tech industry layoffs, high prices, none of these things affect me at all. There are of course things that would affect me and I’m not a dick and I read stuff and I care but basically nothing *directly* registers.

Just a week after both Meta & Google promised Senators that they would never block a potentially embarrassing story related to a candidate for national office, both companies did just that. Apparently the promise only applied to embarrassing info on GOP candidates. www.techdirt.com/2024/09/30/b...

It probably will not shock you to find out that big tech’s promises to never again suppress embarrassing leaked content about a political figure came with a catch. Apparently, it only applies when …
