After four years, DSA has won the biggest Green New Deal victory in US history. But the Build Public Renewables Act Act isn't just a model law— it's proof that socialists can win transformative change at a historic scale. Help make sure it's just the start? http://socialists.nyc/join
And last but not least, Build Public Renewables mandates democratic planning for our energy. We'll keep pushing to bring even more democratic accountability too. And to Dump Driscoll, the former fossil fuel lawyer the Governor wants heading NYPA--we already made him 180 on BPRA!
For-profit control means a system that puts CEO's profits first, and public good last. Build Public Renewables means prioritizing *lowering* bills, not raising them. And making shutting down polluting plants in Black and brown neighborhoods the *first* priority, not the last.
Especially key: Build Public Renewables takes "a just transition for fossil fuel workers" from rallying cry to reality. Through gold-standard union labor language from the AFL-CIO, that creates an Office of Just Transition, and funds a new era of green union jobs in the buildout.
NYPA projects are publicly owned, guaranteeing gold-standard project labor agreements, public works, and other labor and democracy standards. Any and all contracting is to aid NYPA's rapid scaling up, subject to identical BPRA ownership and standards.
Corporations have kept NY stuck at a paltry 4% wind and solar power for four years. Build Public Renewables calls their bluff, mandating that NYPA step in to build whatever corporations don't, so that we actually transition off fossil fuels at the speed we need.
Build Public Renewables unleashes the country's largest public power provider, the New York Power Authority, to build renewable energy at the scale and speed we need. As a Green New Deal program, it won't just transform our energy system, but use it to uplift the working class.
the worst (complimentary)
oh! and thanks @aoc.bsky.social for getting us on here!
Leadership struggles to condemn violence bc they fundamentally approve of this violence. Mayor Adams is fine with this exact kind of activity when NYPD does it. He thinks it's the right course of action.
