For-profit control means a system that puts CEO's profits first, and public good last. Build Public Renewables means prioritizing *lowering* bills, not raising them. And making shutting down polluting plants in Black and brown neighborhoods the *first* priority, not the last.
Especially key: Build Public Renewables takes "a just transition for fossil fuel workers" from rallying cry to reality. Through gold-standard union labor language from the AFL-CIO, that creates an Office of Just Transition, and funds a new era of green union jobs in the buildout.
NYPA projects are publicly owned, guaranteeing gold-standard project labor agreements, public works, and other labor and democracy standards. Any and all contracting is to aid NYPA's rapid scaling up, subject to identical BPRA ownership and standards.
Corporations have kept NY stuck at a paltry 4% wind and solar power for four years. Build Public Renewables calls their bluff, mandating that NYPA step in to build whatever corporations don't, so that we actually transition off fossil fuels at the speed we need.
Build Public Renewables unleashes the country's largest public power provider, the New York Power Authority, to build renewable energy at the scale and speed we need. As a Green New Deal program, it won't just transform our energy system, but use it to uplift the working class.
Last week, we won Build Public Renewables! After a four-year campaign, this marks the beginning of a Green New Deal for New York. But what does it actually do? And what does this mean for the future of the climate fight? Look no further than our guide to what we won with BPRA. 🧵
