One of Britain’s most famous trees, a sycamore that was several hundred years old and stood in a dip in Hadrian’s Wall, was cut down overnight. A 16-year-old boy was arrested Thursday on suspicion of criminal damage. nyti.ms/3PWHzwv

Regardless of age, the level of cruelty that went into felling this tree is heinous and should forever haunt whomever did this for the rest of their life.

Surely social media and content creation had NOTHING to do with the motive here. Surely.

As well as criminal charges, I hope this follows his name for the rest of his life and carries that shame with him forever.

The good news is that Acer pseudoplanatus coppices well. So long as the tree is healthy, it may (slowly) come back. The fact that this nearing the end of the growing season is also a good thing, as it should have significant energy stores in its roots.

This tree has seen wars. It has seen love. And it's seen folk of all types walking by and resting beneath its shade. This is so sad.

Writer Anne Louise Avery, on Xitter, has composed this curse for the occasion, and I feel every word of it deep in my bones. #Sycamore

A curse composed by writer Anne Louise Avery, shown above a picture of the sycamore tree silhouetted against the night sky and the northern lights. "What will happen to the men who felled the Great Tree on Picts' Wall, asked Old Fox. The Lady Coventina will rise from her course below, said the King, & draw their torn & tattered souls down past the sweet harebells & the glass beads & the rings of jet, down past the soldiers' bones & the luck-worn coins, down into the far earth where all the dark things of this world are buried in the end of ends."
