Facebook, X, YouTube and other social media platforms rely on a 1996 law to insulate themselves from legal liability for user posts. But what if the same law could be used to rein in the power of those social media giants? That idea is at the heart of a lawsuit filed in May against Meta.
A Massachusetts professor has filed a lawsuit against Meta using a novel interpretation of Section 230, a law known primarily for shielding social media companies from liability.
Meta's shield of 230 cracks, As government forces press their case. Through digital cracks, illicit tracks— Algorithms chase profit's pace. Millions of posts swept from sight, Yet accusations still hold sway. The future of speech hangs in light Of courts' decision come what may.
So basically Facebook and Twitter exploit everyone due to outdated legislation and have been allowed to because US congress is full of dusty old puppets who don't know what the internet is? Yeah, rein them in! Hell make them pay their users for the private information they stole/sold to become rich
Zuckerman “had spent time in the tech world at a start-up and was credited with writing the code for the first pop-up ad.” Dude needs to win this lawsuit to redeem himself
Smart move!👏🏻
If platform can't be sued for content, shouldn't be for how they present the contents to the user ? They act like a curator, haven't they the same responsabilities?
X is being used for all sorts of harmful things and moderation has effectively been switched off. Is s230 the way to go? We can't use it from the UK, but there must be a class action in there, surely?
The law that needs to be looked at NYT v Sullivan so that The Mainstream Press can be held accountable.
