I watched the Lord of the Rings trilogy recently and was struck again by the level of character in the details: the production design was absolutely masterful. Also the lighting: when things were dark, there was still enough contrast to SEE WHAT WAS GOING ON.

Oh the entirely black screen because it's dark thing needs to die in a fire, same with inaudible whispers + extremely loud explosions.
