You might have seen that the Seattle Worldcon is going to have special award for SFF poetry (see link below). I enquired - and Calypso is officially eligible, along with other verse-novels. Possibly something to bear in mind in the months ahead, if you enjoyed it.. seattlein2025.org/2024/08/14/n...
Worldcon nightmare last night: 30 person panel, discussing homeopathy.
Reading another fantasy novel that takes a rather dim view of human immortality. I wonder, more and more, why fantasy tends to be so pro-death? I'm not sure that mortality is a beautiful motivator, responsible for some of humanity's best aspects. Grateful for examples of more utopian takes!
Round two of this year's best SF books is up at Esquire! I love these summer books for a lot of reasons, including how they stretch the bounds of science fiction in a lot of ways I think it needs stretching. (Covers are from the spring picks, but the summer books are at the top of the list!)
This year’s best sci-fi outings are full of questions about how we might live differently with each other, on our troubled planet or in the furthest reaches of space.
Absolutely in love with the new pocket-book edition of Les Oiseaux du Paradis, the French edition of Birds of Paradise translated by Gilles Goullet, out now from J'ai Lu! ✨️🪶
These Star Wars TV series (barring Andor, which was exceptional) have terrific antagonists, but I'm really not feeling the protagonists. Opposite problem to the MCU, I guess.
Calypso is one of the Financial Times' best summer books of 2024! "Fusing Ancient Greek epic with far-flung futurism, this is bold, innovative stuff." www.ft.com/content/0737...

Ahhh, a really wonderful review in Reactor - "Langmead’s new novel-in-verse, Calypso, takes luminous advantage of the way outer space lends itself to the grandiose language of myth and poetry... Let there be more epic space verse, please, and let it all be as successful as Calypso."
A review of Oliver K. Langmead's epic verse space opera.
