The last piece of Hieroglyphics is from the temple at Philae in 394. A small family of priests appear to have kept up the Pagan temple there after the retreat of the Roman Empire ~300. It was dated "in the year 110", as the priests counted from Diocletan, waiting for the return of pagan rule.

Another priest (maybe related?) wrote the last Demotic inscription there in 452. The last inscription related to Pagan gods came in Greek a few years later. Soldiers on the order of Justinian closed the pagan temples in Philae in 535 - 537.
