i can't prove this but i think it's likely that the far bigger threat to democrats is the broader divorce between the political right and the fact-based mainstream media, driven by a sense that it's hopelessly biased in *favor* of democrats.

which is not to say the media should bend over backwards or compromise its integrity to try to win back people who have long since abandoned it. not only would that lead to bad journalism, but it wouldn't work anyway.
