Wavefunction collapse requiring consciousness implies the universe wasn't "real" until about 300,000 years ago (or however far back you want to push animal consciousness). Not sure that's an implication that was ever taken seriously.

I always got the sense that this argument was always a particular new age interpretation of quantum physics (in which it is indeed posited that human consciousness created the universe), which makes its deployment here even more weird
