Going to infrequently post the literal meanings of animal names/animal kanji in Japanese until I forget or get bored. Starting with my favorite: Hedgehog = Harinezumi (ハリネズミ/針鼠) = Needle Mouse

It’s absolutely needle mouse season in France at the moment. But sadly the French word, hérisson, isn’t analysable as anything fun. It’s just a sort of diminutive form of the some sort of Vulgar Latin term like ‘hericius’ or something.
Needle Mouse! I am in love! What an appropriate and perfect name.
