Something I love about Elmore Leonard is he wrote Ten Rules of Writing upon request and they're very useful and famous now but he also admitted later he wrote them in five minutes right before they were due. Legend fs.blog/elmore-leona...

Love this in particular, cuts clean against certain writing philosophies as of late

From Elmore Leonard's 10 Rules of Writing:

3. Never use a verb other than “said” to carry dialogue.
The line of dialogue belongs to the character; the verb is the writer sticking his nose in. But said is far less intrusive than grumbled, gasped, cautioned, lied. I once noticed Mary McCarthy ending a line of dialogue with “she asseverated,” and had to stop reading to get the dictionary.

And I hope he got paid handsomely.

Did you ever hear about Samuel Johnson's essay on procrastination? He procrastinated writing it and the messenger boy was standing outside his door, waiting for each sheet to run to take it to the typesetter. I need to reformat it but I have it here: www.samueljohnson.com/ram134.html
