I talked yesterday about once being able to stand down an armed robbery because I was armed as well. So there is your first armed standoff...the US Bureau of Justice Statistics estimates guns are used successfully in self defense 115,000 times/year, and that is the lowest estimate out there.

Safety in numbers is certainly preferable, but I think this is "guns don't make us safer, you will just shoot yourself" and if you believe that, it's fine, though it's untrue. But the notion that you are better able to keep yourself from harm if you lack the means to do that, is absurd.
