Akechi in Persona 5 had a fascinating inversion of this trope. On paper, it checks all the boxes: he gives his life to redeem himself & save the Phantom Thieves. But since it's just after his villain reveal, he instead sees it as an act of revenge where the party finally takes down the man he hates.
