as a formerly British island colony, NZ news was all over the fact that Mauritius is getting the Chagos Islands back from the UK they didn't cover the more global implication: .io domains may get shut down (io is for "Indian ocean" in British Indian Ocean Territory, the official name of Chagos)

for awhile i had mehr.cz, wanting a short TLD, and not that much was available ('mehr' is a common word in German). i remember getting czech-language emails from their domain folks and thinking like "yea I guess i'm on their territory here..." internet stuff is so weird/cool
