Maybe the pre modern bit here is giving up the 'fully automated, better living by machine, tech to the rescue' expectations of the future.
I don't know about mules belonging so much to the pre-modern past. They never really went away in some parts of the world. And attempts to replace them have never quite managed to be as good at what they do best, carry loads long distances over rough terrain without needing to carry much fuel.
