for 25 years now when faced with disappointments I've turned for consolation to Yeat's "To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Nothing" (1914). anyway this past week I've finally learned that the thwarted friend his poem addressed wound up dying on the Lusitania a year later. bummers all around man
Yeats: Hey man, I know that your work has come to nothing but I'm here to help. Friend: With something specific and actionable? Yeats: No, I'm going to publish a poem about how you suck and have failed at life. Friend: 😐 Yeats: And I got you these cruise tickets.
