Geomagnetic storms (the clue is in the name) can cause Aurora, but they can also throw out your electronics. KP9 I power off & unplug my MacBook (seriously). A geomagnetic storm struck Earth 1989. This geomagnetic storm caused a nine-hour outage of Hydro-Québec's electricity transmission system.
