Sophomore year of college, visiting St. Louis Art Museum. Seeing "Keith" a very large portrait by Chuck Close. Absolutely took my breath away. It just melted my brain and I was frozen looking at it. An extremely close second was Guernica in Madrid. Fuckin' hell, man.
I've been painting a series of self-portraits and was looking a lot at Close & Cindy Sherman in the lead up.
I was at the museum earlier this year and it wasn't on display. I was incredibly disappointed. www.slam.org/collection/o...
