We had a family book on how to use the Worldwide Web and there was a strong focus on newsgroups. I was also beguiled by a promotional film for AOL (that was obviously played from a CD ROM) that featured an avatar based chat community called Worlds Away which seemed impossible to me at the time.

(I feel without any research that the likelihood that Worlds Away was a hotbed of child grooming is extremely high.)
