Tony Blair in his new book, On Leadership: ā€œThe twenty-first century technological revolution isn't *an* issue. It is *the* issue of our times. It should dominate the political debate, not be an interesting sidebar.ā€

3ļøāƒ£ Third shift is in the tech industry's reputation. In early 2000s tech was often dismissed as a small sector that wdn't recover from dotcom hype. Then 2005-15 it grew enormously (web 2.0, social, etc). In 2016 the techlash began. Itā€™s a much more reputationally complex and nuanced sector today.

2ļøāƒ£ Next, a move away from tactical comms to strategic thinking (or from reactive to proactive). In the 2000s, we were busy responding to news to get a client namecheck, rather than creating strategically valuable campaigns. News slots were so plentiful you could happily surf the news agenda like that

1ļøāƒ£ The centre of gravity of the comms industry has changed. What were once pure-play PR agencies have evolved into what are, to all intents and purposes, marketing agencies. As media shrunk & the internet grown, PR people have stayed relevant by learning about marketing funnels, brand frameworks, etc

Three shifts Iā€™ve seen in my comms career over the past 20 years šŸ¤“āž”ļø This month Iā€™ll have spent 20 years working in communications, primarily for tech companies. So itā€™s got me thinking about the industry has changed over that time. Three shifts stand out to me... šŸ§µ

The annual roundup from Platformer's @caseynewton.bsky.social is brilliant as always. I need to write more on "Elon Musk's war against journalism" šŸŽÆ And I love his analysis of how the tech narrative will turn depending on who wins the US presidential election this November šŸ˜¬
