Should add that what set the flogging of free people from enslaved ones was the extreme severity of the violence inflicted on the latter. The vast majority of the world's children are still considered fair game to smack around socially, culturally and legally.

I can't read the article so I don't know if there's something I'm missing in this case. Still barbaric of course. It's just that societies have been very keen on physical punishment even without having been based on slavery.
Just like to stress that the concept of corporal punishment is in no way specific to slavery. There were European laws on the books that permitted heads of households to flog family and servants (all free) until the 20th century. Technically until 1920 in Sweden. sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Husaga_...
