I volunteered with the Red Cross Disaster Services for over a decade. Please, toss in a coloring book and some crayons, a deck of cards, a card on knot-tying, a pocket Bible - literally anything to help pass the time. It doesn't add much weight or require a lot of space and it may save your sanity.

Along a similar lines it's nice to have a family photo. It feels good.
