How to engineer a habitable planet: the rise of marine ecosystem engineers through the Phanerozoic doi.org/10.1111/pala... 🧪⚒️🌊 Cribb & Darroch, 2024. "[T]hrough the Phanerozoic, it is clear that bioturbators and reef-building ecosystem engineers have had different trajectories over geological time"

Multicoloured plot showing the relative abundance of different reef-building organisms through time. Vertical axis indicates relative abundance of the different groups, horizontal axis represents time from the Cambrian (over 500 million years ago) on the left to the present day on the right. A white vertical line towards the left of the plot indicates a reef gap that is seen during Stage 10 of the Cambrian Period.
Legend at the bottom indicates the colours used for ten different reef-builder groups (including, among others, different corals, sponges and tube worms). Alt Text from @ThePalAss

So question: ‘relative’ scale, but relative to what? What happened in stage 10 Cambrian period? No record, or no organisms?
