HP Laserjet 5n always used to be the correct answer. Those things were unstoppable. But then people wanted colour and duplex and A3 and WiFi, and see where that got us.

Chase view would be like in Galaxy Force or Planet of Zoom, where camera is behind your ship. As things go behind your ship they'd pop out of the monitor. HUD elements could be kept on same netural distance plane as player ship.

The cockpit view is an issue. Unless you pull the cockpit closer thab the plane of the screen, then nothing else should protrude from the screen. The downside is that it is tiring on the eyes focusing on anything other than the neutral plane. A chase view might work better.
