A lot of people in that thread made it very clear that they found it offensive for me to say "I like Flaubert" because this is somehow oppressing people who select books based on lists of representation and tropes on goodreads.

I don’t like the personal attacks but I appreciate that people are trying to expand what is taught in schools, especially when trying to reach students who may struggle with the language and therefore miss the books’ modern relevancy. Like Shakespeare has a lot of dirty jokes and modern themes
